Personal Stories of Recovery

Client's hospitality helps brighten holidays

This holiday season, Cindy Stuntz played gracious host.

Cindy, a client of Stairways Behavioral Health, fulfilled a goal by hosting friends and neighbors for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.

“For me, it’s not necessarily the food, it’s the people,” she said.

Cindy cooked the meal and opened her apartment up for friends who had no place to share the holidays. The result was a joyous occasion for all who attended.

“A lot of people don’t regularly see their families a lot or are estranged from them,” she said. “Most of them didn’t even know each other, so I tried to keep things friendly and in a holiday atmosphere. They seemed to like it because, by the end of the night, no one wanted to go home.”

Her get-togethers not only provided a welcome meal for the holidays, but were a cause for Cindy to gain a feeling of appreciation as well.

“Until the party, I didn’t realize how much support I have from my family,” Cindy said. “It makes me appreciate what my family does for me.”

Prior to receiving care at Stairways Behavioral Health, Cindy was estranged from her family and suffered from severe anxiety, depression and anger.

Cindy is a client of Stairways’ Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team and regularly attends open studios at BLOOM Collaborative every Tuesday and Thursday. She has also recently created a support group with the National Alliance for Mental Illness for people who undergo electroconvulsive therapy.

Her friendly smile and warm personality are a welcome addition to BLOOM, where she has regained an appreciation for socialization and friendship.

Cindy credits the traditional therapy she received from Stairways as preparation for her for become involved at BLOOM. BLOOM then helped prepare her for life.
