Personal Stories of Recovery

Maryanne Corbin reaches financial goal

It may have seemed like an apartment transformation just happened to coincide with one of confidence for Maryanne Corbin.

But such a makeover was no coincidence.

Thanks to the skills and resources she gained from Stairways’ Financial Literacy class, Maryanne was able to furnish her apartment and gained a greater sense of self in the process.

“It makes me feel good that I have a nice apartment,” Maryanne said. “It makes people say ‘Wow, I can’t believe you have such a nice apartment. I can’t believe you did it all by yourself.’”

Financial Literacy is a class that helps students set and reach financial goals by learning about savings, budgeting and other topics related to finance. The class proved to be a natural fit for Maryanne, who had been trying to save up to purchase furniture for a while.

“I had been wanting to do it for a long time,” she said, but wasn’t aware of the program until a staff member at Stairways referred her to it. “She had me go through the financial program last year. I really liked it and got a lot out of it.”

Maryanne was able to save $85 per month, which she put toward payments for a couch, TV and table.

Though she is responsible for her savings and the furniture that came as a result, Maryanne is quick to give credit to the financial literacy program.

“I’m thankful for financial lit,” she said. “They help people with things like this.”

While Mary Anne has accomplished her mission of furnishing part of her apartment, she isn’t done. Her next goal is to get a new bedroom set and add more living room furniture.
