Fifty years ago, the founders of Stairways recognized the potential healing power of art for people recovering from mental illness. From its very first days as a social rehabilitation program, Stairways has encouraged clients to explore and advance their artistic talent as a means of expression.
Today, Stairways continues the conviction of the founders through the progressive programming of Center City Arts, an art studio in the heart of Erie that provides a unique and pressure-free arts experience open to those who have recovered or are recovering from a mental illness—and to those who assist them in that journey. Through instruction in a variety of art forms, Center City Arts makes the arts accessible, breaks down barriers and fosters confidence and independence.
Our light-filled studio, converted from the former carriage house of the former Rose Koehler Curtze mansion, features sunny skylights, full-spectrum lighting, a library, kitchen, and ample workspace.
The studio offers quality materials and professional instruction that enable participants to explore a variety of art forms, including drawing, painting, weaving, fused glass, jewelry, sculpture, metal arts and printmaking—to name just a few.
Our recently launched online shopping center offers a regular means of selling client work, encouraging and supporting our artists. Check out www.CenterCityArtsErie.org to view unique, original jewelry, paintings, drawings, prints, fused glass pieces, traditional crafts and more.
