Stairways Behavioral Health
On-Site Training

Stairways Behavioral Health offers training at various sites throughout the region.

The catalog provides a brief description of the class, and the schedule is available by viewing the calendar. To register for any of the classes, please contact Abby Burgos at  814.878-2126 or via email at aburgos@stairwaysbh.org .

2004 Catalog Descriptions

Art of Setting Limits
This training is designed to help staff develop confidence in dealing more effectively with non-compliant individuals. Staff will learn how to avoid personal power struggles between themselves and the non-compliant person, how to set clear and enforceable limits and sharpen listening skills to maximize limit setting ability. 3 hrs.

Caffeine and Post Acute Withdrawal
This training is designed to educate mental health and addictions workers in meeting the complex needs of the clients they serve. The information presented is intended for staff who can then share this knowledge with consumers. Caffeine Education: Explains the harmful effects of caffeine use, both to the mental health consumer and the recovering addict/ alcoholic. Post Acute Withdrawal: Residents are often confused, frightened and angry as they begin recovery. These symptoms are just a few of the problems that may be attributable to Post Acute Withdrawal (PAW). 3 hrs.

CPR Challenge - For Stairways employees only!
This is designed to give Red Cross certification through a challenge course. The challenge course is a test out. Participants will need to demonstrate the hands on portion of the training and pass the written test. Prerequisites: Attendees must have a valid CPR card and must have passed the exam with a grade of 90% or higher. 1 hr.

CPR/First Aid - For Stairways employees only!
Training is designed to give Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification to staff members. This is a mandatory training for all staff members and part of required training within the first six months of employment. First Aid is mandatory every three years. 6 hrs.

CPR Refresher - For Stairways employees only!
The same topics covered in the initial CPR course will be covered in this refresher training. Trainees will also learn how to use an AED. 3 hrs.

Context for Rehabilitation: Understanding the Stages of Adult Development
A study of people as they grow through life cycles. Particular emphasis is placed on the physical, social, and emotional challenges of each stage and their implications for any individual staff or client. 3 hrs.

Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI)
Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) teaches safe and effective techniques so that trainees can feel confident handling any violent episode with minimal anxiety and maximum safety. This training helps prevent violence situations from arising and demonstrates how to safely intervene when disruptive behavior has gone too far. CPI methods are not only effective, but they also do not damage the professional bond staff have worked to establish with the people in their care. 8 hrs.

CPI Refresher
The same topics covered in the initial CPI course will be covered in this refresher training. 4 hrs. Mandatory yearly.

Disaster Plan Orientation
In this training participants will learn the following: a brief history of the plan's development, a review of term definitions, and overview of eight (8) disasters, and explanation of the clinical on-call system in relationship to the disaster plan, fire drills including when and the location to which one must evacuate, and the purpose of the Safety Committee. A video will be shown and trainees will be given handouts from the American Red Cross and FEMA. 1.3 hrs.

Documentation and Incident Reports
The key to proper documentation is to start the process as soon after the incident or interaction as possible. This training teaches staff the important steps of documentation which include knowing how and what to document; being objective; and organizing information chronologically in DAP format. Additionally there will be a review of agency policies and agency approved forms concerning this topic area. 3 hrs.

Driver Safety Video
This video will determine just how skilled and knowledgeable trainees are when they are behind the driver's wheel, and how capable they are of handling traffic situations and possible hazards. 1 hr.

Drug and Alcohol
The abuse of mood and mind altering substances by consumers has become a significant concern for providers of services. This component consists of multiple segments including identification skills, relapse prevention skills, treatment approaches and the value of the twelve-step or self- help program. 3 hrs.

Ethics
The purpose of this training is to inform staff members of professional, ethical standards as they apply to our profession and more specifically to our clients. In addition, discussion will focus on actual circumstances in which determining the appropriate ethical action may be unclear. The is to minimize staff exposure to credibility damaging situations. 3 hrs.

Exposure Control
In this training participants will learn how to eliminate or minimize employee occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials. This training also educates staff regarding the causes, transmission, treatment, signs, symptoms, and prevention of TB, STD's, Hepatitis and HIV disease. Instructor will also cover prevention of needle stick and sharps injuries. 3 hrs.

Family Perspective on Mental Illness
This training examines the effect a person's mental illness has on family members. This training also covers important empathy and communication skills building exercises. The NAMI Family-to-Family Education program is the basis for many of the materials in this training.

Fire Safety Video
This training is intended to show viewers the basic elements that are included in an evacuation plan. The video provides viewers with the opportunity to see evacuation plans in action in various types of workplaces. Viewers will discover the common elements found in most evacuation plans and the key factors to consider when determining the appropriate plan for their own workplace. To complement this training a mandatory Fire Extinguisher Training will be required of all staff. The dates for this training will be announced. 1 hr.

First Aid Challenge
This is designed to give Red Cross certification through a challenge course. The challenge course is a test out. Participants will need to demonstrate the hands on portion of the training and pass the written test. Prerequisites: Attendees must have a valid First Aid card and must have passed the exam with a grade of 90% or higher. 1 hr.

HIPAA/Compliance
In recent years, the Department of Justice and the Department of Health & Human Services' Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has called for the implementation of corporate compliance programs to help prevent fraud and abuse in health care. This course will review SBH's Compliance Plan and the role of staff to ensure adherence to these standards. In addition, training on the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) will be provided. 3 hrs.

HIPAA/Compliance Refresher
This is a self-study course. Staff will have the freedom to complete course materials when it is most convenient for them to do so within a designated timeframe. Training materials are sent through interdepartmental mail. Expected time to complete course content is one hour. Staff who prefer taking this refresher course in a classroom setting may register for the Introductory course instead of this self-study (see above course description for topics covered.)

Infection Control
Staff will learn the goals of the Infection Control program at Stairways and the part each employee is expected to play in meeting those goals. Staff will learn ways in which infections may be prevented through simple procedures as handwashing, vaccination, use of universal precautions, personal protective equipment, and safe work practices. 2 hrs.

Introduction to Psychiatric Rehabilitation
The goal of psychiatric rehabilitation is to enable individuals to compensate for or eliminate the functional defects, interpersonal barriers, and environmental challenges that are created by their mental illness. Students will be introduced to the principles by which psychiatric rehabilitation operates to assist someone with a serious mental illness to restore and/or create an acceptable and dignified quality of life. 3 hrs.

Introduction to Quality and Customer Satisfaction
The goal of this training is to enhance one's knowledge of Continuous Quality improvement principles, customer service, basic statistical techniques, and the team approach to problem solving, thereby improving service delivery to internal and external customers. Training emphasis is on improving organizational performance and using quality principles to better understand customer requirements, thus ensuring quality services are delivered from the onset. 3 hrs.

Magisterial Court Civil and Landlord/Tenant Procedure
This training is a comprehensive review of the civil and landlord/tenant rules procedure governing the practice before a district justice. Included are issues dealing with actions of trespass and assumpsit; landlord/tenant cases; orders of possession relative to the reclaiming of rental property; execution of civil judgements; and the filing of judgements in the court of common pleas (office of the prothonotary). 3 hrs.

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
This training will instruct staff on how to use Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). A video will be viewed and staff will see what the MSDS binder looks like and also where to locate this binder in their unit. 1 hr.

Medical Conditions
This training will introduce the staff members to some of the most common medical conditions present within our client population. This will include a brief description of the condition, etiology, treatment and intervention's available. 3 hrs.

Medications
In this training participants will learn medication history, its past, present, and future. Trainees will also learn major classifications of medications and issues pertaining to compliance and non-compliance. Instruction will cover how to recognize the symptoms of relapse and basic concepts related to the effect of psychotropic medications on brain neurotransmitters. Diabetes: Meds associated with this. 3 hrs.

Medication Certification
Safe medication monitoring is a cycle consisting of observation, reporting changes, communicating information, documentation, and back to observing. The focus of this training will be to provide staff with the necessary skills to take you through cycle using lectures and hands-on experience in the classroom with individualized follow-up in your assigned program or unit. 6 hrs.

Medication Re-certification
This training will provide staff with an overview of the topics discussed in the Medication Certification training. 2 hrs.

Mental Illness and Crisis Intervention
The objectives of this training are to present a brief introduction to mental illness and to equip the mental health worker with procedures and practices necessary to deal effectively with crisis situations. Trainees also will gain an understanding in the role of psychiatric stabilization as an outcome of crisis intervention and as the goal of the continuum of treatment. 4 hrs.

Mental Illness and the Older Adult
This course offers a review of the most common mental health diagnoses in older adults and corresponding treatment strategies. In addition, age-related social, physical and cognitive changes will be discussed. 3 hrs.

Mental Retardation
A growing sub-population is the consumer with a concurrent diagnosis of mental illness and mental retardation. This training emphasizes: proper feeding techniques, communication with nonverbal individuals, management of aggressive behavior, teaching self-help skills and the principle of normalization. 3 hrs.

Pennsylvania Crimes Code
This training involves a comprehensive review of the most frequently used sections of the PA Crimes Code (PA CS Title 18). Also included in this presentation will be the inspection of particular areas of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetic Act (PACS Title 35). This training will be divided into two, three-hour parts.

Principles of Justification
The training involves the principle of justification contained in the Pennsylvania Crimes Code. These statutes are the standards used in determining the amount of force one can use in specific situations. The principles are outlined in sections of PACS Title 18 (PA Crimes Code), and are used by law enforcement and courts in deciding whether or not a person acted within the law when utilizing force. 3 hrs.

Safe Crisis Management
SCM is a comprehensive crisis intervention and aggressive behavior management program that is based on the principle of the "Least Restrictive Alternative" and on recognized youth care theories. This program will provide your staff with a comprehensive, positive, strength based approach to meet the challenge of managing youth behavior. Safe Crisis Management emphasizes prevention and non-physical intervention as preferred management strategies. In addition, SCM provides physical intervention strategies to be used when necessary.

The physical technology which has been designed to provide various options to meet the differences of size, weight, gender and client specific problems has been reviewed and endorsed by experts in physical and forensic medicine. All physical techniques are designed to ensure client safety. 12 hrs

Safe Crisis Management Refresher
A refresher on techniques taught is the full SCM training. 6 hrs.

Schizophrenia
This training provides a comprehensive view of this mental illness. Discussion will focus on diagnosis causation theories, subcategories, role of medical and psychological treatment and effective ways of working with the individual with schizophrenia. 3 hrs.

Testifying in Court
This training deals with the art of competent courtroom testimony. 1.3 hrs.

The Art of Setting Limits
This training is designed to help staff develop confidence in dealing more effectively with non-compliant individuals. Staff will learn how to avoid personal power struggles between themselves and the non-compliant person, how to set clear and enforceable limits and sharpen listening skills to maximize limit setting ability. 3 hrs.

Understanding Bipolar Disorder and Major Depression
This training addresses the patterns of behavior, mood and symptomatology of the two mood disorders; Bipolar Disorder and Major Depression. Also discussed are treatment modalities with an emphasis on the medications used to treat these disorders. Related topics such as suicide and the range of complications experienced by individuals with these disorders are presented as well so as to provide a comprehensive view of these mental health disorders. 3 hrs.

Working with Children/Adolescents
This course offers insight into the Wraparound Process. These services offered to youth and young adults are tailored to meet the unique individual child and family needs. Focus will concentrate on the gatekeeping process, mobile therapy, therapeutic staff support services, and behavioral services consultant. The service delivery implemented in Erie County will be explained. Case examples and a mock inter-agency team meeting will be used. 3 hrs.
