The Stairways Behavioral Health Center for Arts and Humanities provides a unique and relaxed arts experience to those who have recovered or are recovering from a mental illness and those who support them. The Center is also open to any community member interested in learning more about the arts and mental health recovery.

The Center offers quality materials, professional instruction and unique experiences that allow participants to explore a variety of art forms from drawing and printmaking to music and creative writing. Do I Need Experience or Training?
Absolutely not! The Center welcomes anyone interested in arts, from beginners to trained professionals. Enjoy a pressure-free environment in which you may choose the art forms you wish to explore and decide on your level of participation. Our goal is to provide a relaxed arts community that stimulates and inspires personal growth, artistic development and mental health for all.

How Much Does it Cost to Participate?
Most Center activities are free. The calendar of events indicates the costs, if any, for classes and programs. Donations are always accepted. To make a charitable contribution, please contact Director Lee Steadman at 814-456-2731 or lsteadman@stairwaysbh.org.

Drawing and Painting
From the beginner to advanced student, this class explores a wide variety of drawing and painting mediums, including acrylics, watercolors, pencils and pastels to create landscapes, portraits and other images. Students can also learn from the masters through he Center’s art library.

Music
Stairways’ choral group, Barak (“blessings” in Swahili), performs at many community events and enjoys a great following. Basic and advanced vocals are taught.

cahFused Glass
This popular class introduces the art of fused glass and offers a rare opportunity to learn how luminous jewelry, ornaments, sun catchers and functional bowls and vases are formed out of colorful glass.

Creative Writing
The Center provides instruction for many forms of written
expression. Participants practice their writing expertise through poetry, stories, novels, plays, essays, memoirs and screenplays as an attitude, a behavior, a craft and an art.

Sculpture
For people who truly enjoy working with their hands, this class explores personal expression using the three-dimensional form. Clay, wire mobiles and group sculptures are taught with an emphasis on the process of creating something beautiful to share with friends, family and the community.

Printmaking
This beautiful art form is a great way for the beginner to create imagery from drawings and nature. Learn several forms of printmaking, including monoprints, Intaglio, reliefs, silk
screening, papermaking and other printing press techniques. This is a unique educational opportunity typically offered only at the college level.

Explore whatever art forms or combination of forms that intrigue you. Instruction and guidance for all art

Meet the Director
Lee Steadman, director of the Center for Arts and Humanities, is a painter, teaching artist and arts education program specialist. His solo and group exhibitions have been seen around the country; he has illustrated several books on nature. Steadman’s artwork is part of
private, corporate and museum permanent collections and has appeared at the Smithsonian Institution and the Frick Museum of Fine Art. His work can also be seen online at www.leesteadman.com.

Steadman has designed and participated in several long-term art residency projects at schools across Pennsylvania. He currently serves on the board of trustees of the Arts Council of Erie and has served on numerous panels for the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts. In 2007, Steadman was appointed to the Governor’s Outdoor Task Force Panel to help Pennsylvanians reconnect to the outdoors.
